Bach and our brains
Saturday, June 15th, 02002Listen to any JS Bach... say the Well Tempered Clavier or the Goldberg variations. Rapture. My mind finds joy there, but I can not grok, with my current education, the beauty that lies in the mechanics that I know are present. Should I learn the theory and principles that drive it? If I did, would I see the math as the music spread across time? Would the listening experience be different? Could I understand it as Bach may have? Did Bach perceive it differently, more fully, or better than I am able? How was Glenn Gould's understanding different that Bach's? If my brain was more powerful, could I run the fugue "programs" of Bach or Gould? If I could, would this increased power have, as part, a capability or requirement for introspection of the process that would ruin the effect? Could I love/feel/understand it more/better than them with greatly increased cognitive abilities or is it all unachievable? How would I know what Bach felt? How can I quantify this or my own understanding?
Questions are much more important than answers.
Answers never sought do not reveal themselves.

Austin is hot and humid. Too hot and too humid. Also sickly hip.

The paint is striped off of the garage and house windows. I hope everything will painted by the weekend.
Only a few details are left in the north upstairs bedroom. Hope to move back in over the weekend... Looking pretty good.
