Busy, Talking Heads

Thursday, February 27th, 02003

Very busy at work. Work through the weekend, but perhaps off the last half of next week.

I wonder why I never really knew how much The Talking Heads rocked? I kind of did, but hadn't really listened to too much. Lately, lots of the talking heads!

Driving in our Airstream, we're a bad on the road.
With equipment roadies, and manager, we've got a heavy load.
Airstream, Airstream, Airstream, Get out of my lane.
Airstream, Airstream, Airstream, Ahhhhhhh.

On our way to your town, 'cause you've never seen us play.
With our Airstream's aerodynamic design, we should be there any day.
Airstream, Airstream, Airstream, Get out of my lane.
Airstream, Airstream, Airstream, Ahhhhhhh.

Airstream is so shiny and it's made of aluminum.
You can't tell if its a '64 or an '81.

I know it's American made, so my chest just swells with pride.
Then I grab that stainless steel handle and I take a step inside.
Double installation, a diamond tuck and roll.
Toilet, shower, refrigerator. We're completely self-contained!

Airstream, Airstream, Airstream, Get out of my lane.
Airstream, Airstream, Airstream, Ahhhhhhh.

Airstream is so beautiful, we can hardly keep the foxes out.
And when we round the final corner, we can hear them shout -
Airstream!

From The Vandal's classic '80s punk albumn.

jwz's weblog is always interesting.

I have a photo credit in this article from Preservation Magazine (also available in print form) for a random photo I took when I was in Atlanta.

Adrian Sannier has a webpage that doesn't suck so much now and has the tangle document up.

Lots ‘o bidness

Sunday, February 9th, 02003

It snowed a bit last night. Only traces left on the mountain. It was strange to wake up, look out the window and see water coming off the roof and gathered on the concrete with patches of snow about. The water changed the whole atmosphere. I went drving around for some shopping and noticed physically the difference that the moisture made. Things seemed different, fresh. Albuquerque's a far cry from Arrakis, but it's interesting to have my water-sense so hightened after only a month of residence. Water in Iowa was a given.

I'm enjoying myself at work. It's certainly keeping me busy. The idea of a project that lasts on a time scale much greater than a month is very apealing. This enables a quality that couldn't be had the the 1, 2, 3, and 4 week at a time projects I was doing for IBM. One thing is certain, I don't miss globe-trotting at all. Having the weekends for myself is amazing. I feel my thoughts stretching out and coming into focus.

Made it to the Sandia foothills trail off of Indian School (road) today with not enough light to make a good hike. I expect I'll return there next weekend. Bought some Albuquerque and New Mexico area guides for hiking, camping, and mountain biking from REI today. Reading up...

I've been running Linux-only without any Microsoft what-so-ever since I got to New Mexico (funny how the great Linux backer requires you to use Windows on your laptop). Recently I had to do some Windows to run Visio. Coming back to Windows, I'm not impressed at all. I mean seriously, for a talented user, Linux on a laptop does it all today and does it well.

I'm going to see about wine and the CrossOver plugin to run Viso sans MS. It's been said before, but now I see it clearly happening on the desktop very soon: Linux - World domination, Fast.

Listening to Art Blakey this evening - At The Cafe Bohemia Volume Two. I like that kind of straight-ahead up-temp jazz quite a bit.

Spenser and Amy have a web page with some photos showing what they're up to in Japan.

I'm a sucker for A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.

Beef writes and wonders how I pick such smokin' books. Simple really: almost daily browsing of this, plus a periodic sampling of this, coupled with the serendipity of amazon along the way. Oh, I also fell upon Eliezer Yudkowsky's recommeded reading list a number of years ago. That stirred the pot up quite a bit.

I finished Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom a while ago. Although I don't buy into the theme park fetishism, Whuffie is a meme that won't die.

People at work bought me some house plants and had cake for my birthday. That was nice.

Space shuttle explosion

Saturday, February 1st, 02003

Shit, Space shuttle explosion. I rememeber vividly the last time there was a space shuttle disaster... Watertown South Dakota, Math Class, 6th grade, January 28, 1986. How may of us drive 20 year old cars? Why do our astronauts fly 20 year old spacecraft?
