Coronado State Monument and Snowy Sandia Peak

Friday, November 26th, 02004

Today's activities included a trip to the Coronado State Monument (lame), followed by a drive up the unmaintained, snow-covered, rutted, and precariously slippery Placitas backroad to the North Sandia Peak:

Although it was 45 in Albuquerque today, the temperature was barely above 20° F at Sandia Peak's 10,378 ft. of elevation:

On the way back down on the easy paved road, we got stuck after I asked to stop so I could take a picture of this this sign:

Luckily, a kind dude in a big truck stopped to pull us out.

I didn't buy anything today. My position is on this day of mega shopping is not quite like this, but deciededly not like this. I can't take the crowds, don't understand the strong holiday/shopping correlation, am not suckered by "deals", and would rather shop (when required) in peace.

I saw the following happen, but didn't catch the significance. Perhaps I'm not
as 'leet as I used to be:

This is now part of a Wikipedia article on "Leet".

Welcome to Albuquerque’s Hotbed of Conservative Blogging

Thursday, November 11th, 02004

According to the always interesting Pika Brittlebush, my home is "Albuquerque's hotbed of conservative blogging". At least I'm an "obviously intelligent anomaly".

I welcome Larry to his new home in Albuquerque's conservative stronghold and encourage you to check out Pika's photo gallery of the south valley's Day of the Dead parade, while visiting her site.

Yipee! Firefox 1.0 was released today (slashdot discussion).

Fedora Core 3

Monday, November 8th, 02004

Fedora Core 3 was released today. It won't do me any good, until I can get its Perl to play well with Apache 1.3.x/mod_perl/HTML::Mason for a project I'm working on, but I'll try downloading it with bit torrent from the hotel room this evening and putting it on a play system when I get home. Seems like it was only yesterday that RedHat 9 was released. Time marches on.

LLNL’s IBM BlueGene/L does 70.72 TFlop/s!

Saturday, November 6th, 02004

IBM, recently but only very temporarily surpassed by SGI, has come back strong and hit it out of the park with a 70.72 TFlop/s top500 run.

70,720,000,000,000 floating point operations per second!

Six months ago, the world's fastest computer could only do 35,860,000,000,000 Flop/s.

Speaking of large-scale computation, I'm headed to Pittsburgh and SC2004 in a few hours.

The Vote - County by County

county by county: red vs blue

We have a winner

Tuesday, November 2nd, 02004

10:49 PM - Ohio was just called for Bush by Fox, so as far as I can tell, we have a winner. This means that I can go to bed. Beyond that truth, I don't know what the effects will be.

C-SPAN and Yahoo coverage will be fun to look at in the morning.

Update 11/03 5:45 AM:

South Dakota has spoken

New Mexico's still undecided.

Food for thought:

Year Winning Presidential Candidate Popular Vote (%) Majority?
