Bicycle Commuter Route via Google Maps API

Wednesday, June 29th, 02005

Google announced the availability of an API to their Maps product today.

It's pretty sweet. I've used it to map my bicycle route to and from work.

In North Carolina for a few days

Monday, June 20th, 02005

I'm in North Carolina (Raleigh area) on business for a few days. Just got in, and everything's real green.

I spent most of the fight working through the pickaxe book. Ruby's really growing on me.

Oak Flats and Back

Saturday, June 18th, 02005

I got ~37 miles in this morning from my house to Oak Flats and back. I rode with full panniers about 1/4 loaded.

This is what an elevation profile looks like:

Training for RAGBRAI

Friday, June 10th, 02005

I really need to begin training for RAGBRAI (I'm starting tomorrow, I swear). I googled for New Mexico bicycle touring routes and found this tremendous resource: New Mexico Touring Society. Awesome. I'm thinking the Tijeras Trot shouldn't be too difficult of a start tomorrow morning.

Theremin

When we were in college at ISU, Beef tried to convince me to build a Theremin. It never happened, but it would have been cool.

Ruby and Ruby on Rails

Monday, June 6th, 02005

I've been learning the Ruby language over the course of the past couple days. I was inspired to do this mostly to better understand the hot new Ruby on Rails web application framework. It's been a very interesting learning experience. Is Ruby a sane Perl or a better Python? I'm reserving judgment until I can study it for a little while longer, but I remain stoked after a few days of fairly in-depth analysis.

GMail

Sunday, June 5th, 02005

As an experiment, I've configured my personal email addresses to forward a copy of every email I receive to my gmail account. I'm going to try and use only gmail for the next few weeks and see if it's everything that people say it is. I'm really, really, really, used to composing email text with mutt and vim, so it might take some getting used to, but we'll see.
