NMOSUG Talk on Ruby

I'll be giving a talk at the November 9th New Mexico Open Source Users Group meeing on Ruby, including a whirlwind tour of Ruby on Rails.

Wednesday, November 9, 2005 6:30 PM at SWCP.

Those interested in learning what's behind all the recent Ruby buzz and those who are generally interested in dynamic scripting languages and web development frameworks, should find it an interesting talk.

More information (including directions) can be found on the NMOSUG meetings Wiki page.

I'll try and post slides a few days before the meeting.

I just stumbled across your site whilst looking for some semi-decent photos of Albuquerque, where I now live. Also a grad student at UNM. So, I really like your photopgraphy and just wanted to tell you. I know your most recent post has nothing to do with photography, but this seemed the easiest place to leave a comment. Thanks!

  2. Matthew Bohnsack Says:

Cool. I'm glad you like the photos. Welcome to ABQ!

You must be working hard on this presentation with the limited activity on the site.

I haven't started yet. I got too much other stuff cooking between work and school. I'll do some prep this weekend and post my slides.

classic bohnsack presentation material. it would be great if you could provide video or audio documentation of such a project but that is probably more trouble than its worth.

    What about a podcast?

  7. Matthew Bohnsack Says:

Good idea. If someone records it, I'll post it. I'm considering buying a mike that I could hook to latop to record for future talks.

Thanks for the slides. Are there more examples? Some people have said that Ruby is much like Smalltalk. In a superficial way it is. And for scripting type things, so far I like GNU Smalltalk better. You may want to try that out, too.

  9. Matthew Bohnsack Says:

Ruby shares some semantics with Smalltalk, but it uses a syntax that's more familar to users of other scripting languages like Perl. It seems much more natural to me.

There are many good examples on the web. Here's a great one that specifically talks about similarities with Smalltalk: http://www.martinfowler.com/bliki/CollectionClosureMethod.html

There are more than a few good Ruby books/tutorials availble online. I'd suggest starting here: http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/20020103.html

Does simmilar documentation exist for GNU Smalltalk?
